An Unassuming Man

Today I attended the funeral of a quiet, gentle and unassuming man. Tributes to him all described the profound impact of his life on those around him.

As I listened, again it became very clear to me that a human life does not need to be loud and neon-like to be seen, heard and valued.

We said goodbye to Terry Harper, but he has left his beautiful presence embedded in us all and we’re the richer for that.

About Don

I love life. Sometimes it makes sense, other times not. Discerning its underlying patterns and beauty always provides great reward and meaning and is a passion I ineptly follow. I feel deeply attached to nature and love the sea with its distinct moods and colour and find walking along its beaches wonderfully inspiring. Writing, sketching and photography is a sheer joy for me and the blog is one of the places I am able to express these pursuits.

Well-said. We need more people like him. It’s a shame the loud always seem to get so much attention, usually undeserving.

  10. Isn’t it Shakespeare who wrote “Coins always make sound but currency notes are always silent…”
Quiet people often have a lot in them & most influence around them in the quiet way you described.
He sounds like he was a very special soul.

Not sure about who wrote the quote, but I must say I like it. Thank you for your comment and yes, you’re right, he was a special soul. 🙂

Yours and other’s memories of Terry will keep him alive in hearts and minds but in the way he lived his life – quietly – he has made a tremendous impact obviously. It reminds me of the African saying: Walk softly but carry a big stick …
